Studying music has been a significant part of my life for over 30 years. A series of piano teachers (Cindy, Renee, Sean, Pam, Janice...) exerted influence in my life, teaching me how to listen, analyze, persevere, prepare, perform... That list of teachers covers almost 20 years of piano study. I also have a line of trombone teachers (Jay, Roger, JoDee...) and conducting teachers (Tom, Sam, Dan...). These people formed me as a musician and teacher, and they shaped how I learn for the rest of my life.

My wife Mary took music lessons too, and our kids study music with the best teachers we could find (Heidi and Kim). Mary and I think that getting music lessons for our children is one of the best things we can do to help them become resilient, creative, patient, flexible, brave, open, adaptable, and happy as learners.

That is why I support the work my friend Clint Velazquez is doing in Kansas City, MO with Base Academy of Music. Clint wants every kid in Kansas City to have access to music lessons, especially young students who are just getting started. BAM helps parents provide their children with high-quality music teaching at an affordable price and as close to their own neighborhood as possible.

I've been around BAM as a board member since its beginning, and it has been such a pleasure to see the impact that it has on all those involved. 115 students (!!!) go to Base Academy for Music to get a music lesson every week. It's been so fun to watch BAM grow and serve its community.

But there's work to be done. There's a waiting list. And there are students who haven't heard about BAM yet. There are parents who want their kids to have music lessons, but they need something closer to them. There are good teachers looking to build a studio and make an impact.

Base Academy of Music wants to expand. 115 students is a lot, but 500 would be better. Two locations is nice, but why not four or five? There are more kids out there, there's more space out there... We have a plan. What we need is money.

Would you join me in providing financial support to Base Academy of Music for Giving Tuesday this year? Our goal is $15K, but why not more? Help us make November of 2018 the month when BAM found a new gear and really took off. Take a look at the work Clint and BAM's teachers are doing and consider becoming a part of it by donating to the cause of accessible, high-quality, one-on-one music education in Kansas City.

We want every student to have access to the benefits of playing music, but for many families, there are significant barriers to getting started. Partner with us this #GIVINGTUESDAY! If we can raise $15,000 we will be able to serve 150 students.
