I've dreamed of this school for 16 years, and it is finally almost a reality. We've developed a stellar plan for opening the first ever dual language Montessori program and one of the few PUBLIC dual language Montessori programs in the country. Countless children will benefit. Students who would have lost their heritage language will become proficient in reading, math, science, civics and history in not one, but TWO languages. Students who would have had to wait until high school for their first taste of communicating with people in another language and culture will begin learning to speak Spanish when they are just three years old.
We're now at the precipice. We need the funding to open the school. We need to pay our legal fees. We need to pay for our marketing so we can draw a diverse student enrollment. We need to pay consultants to help us develop a strong academic plan for support our emerging bilinguals. We need to purchase a robust bilingual reading program that will support readers who are likely below reading level. We need to train our teacher to guide students in developing not only strong academic skills but also the habits of mind that lead to independence, self-efficacy, and lifelong learning.
