School gardens are living laboratories where interdisciplinary lessons are drawn from real-world experiences, taking lessons out of the textbooks and into nature. The garden engages students by providing a dynamic environment in which to observe, discover, experiment, nurture, and learn. This toolkit serves as a comprehensive guide to school gardening. Through the collaborative efforts of KC Healthy Kids and Kansas City Community Gardens, interested parties can use this toolkit to launch a garden program, learn what resources are available to schools from Kansas City Community Gardens, and receive free lesson plans and classroom activities from KC Healthy Kids to use in the garden classroom. Kansas City Community Gardens serves schools primarily in Jackson, Clay, Platte, Cass, Wyandotte, and Johnson Counties.
