Detroit Food 2020 - Visions of a Food Future

What will the Detroit food system be?

Due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic we have transitioned Detroit Food 2020 to a virtual event. We will honor registration for the March summit. If you would like a partial refund for the difference of the registration rate you paid in March, or would like to cancel your registration and receive a full refund submit your request by October 4.

Detroit Food 2020 - Visions of a Food Future

October 5-9, 2020

Virtual

In 2010, the first Detroit Food Summit considered “Powering Up the Local Food System.”  This theme looked to culture, economics, and wellness as guides to produce a food sovereign, financially viable and healthy system from seed to table to the soil.  Since that first Summit, the Detroit Food System has grown both intentionally and organically.

The Detroit Food 2020 summit looks with intention toward what Detroit Food could, should, and will be in “Visions of a Food Future.”  How do and will the vision of a food system guided by culture, economics, and wellness continue to take shape?  What could, should, and will the Detroit Food System be?

This summit marks the tenth summit, and we will celebrate past work, frame current needs and explore the possibilities. We look to honor Reverend Dr. JoAnn Watson for her championing the creation of the Detroit Food Policy Council, review the city’s food policy from the establishment of the council to the present and examine the direction of food.

Tracks
Tracks at Detroit Food 2020 will include Food Policy, Food Waste, Future of Food, and Mindful Eating for the Beloved Community.
The Food Policy Track will look at food policy through a micro, mezzo and macro lens. Sessions will explore federal, state, and local policy and how those policies affect people here in Detroit. Innovative solutions to policy challenges will be discussed. We all play a role in wasting food and it is up to all of us to fix it. In the Food Waste Track, you’ll find workshops discussing this issue using multiple lenses including culture, climate, policy, and business. The Mindful Eating for the Beloved Community Track will introduce communities of color to a new paradigm and provides new frameworks of approaching public health in marginalized populations that lack access to food- health education. We invite people of color to be a part of the conversation as we launch this effort to frame the mindful movement in terms that are relevant to people of color and as it places people of color in leadership and at the helm of its design. The Future of Food Track will explore the various components that will build our future food system, and engage participants to define what those components are and how we will use them.
